October 5 – Curaçao, with a 1-1 draw away to Trinidad and Tobago, secured top spot in the Concacaf Nations League 1, group A, and qualify for the quarter finals to be played in November.
Haiti, secured second place on goal difference, despite losing 2-0 to a Costa Rican team that had disappointed earlier in the tournament.
Luke Phillip scored first for Trinidad on 39’, but Jordi Paulina kept Curaçao’s unbeaten record with an equaliser on 61’.
It was a miserable international window for Trinidad who only managed a point from their three fixtures and at times looked horribly out of their depth.
Haiti’s were behind to Los Ticos after just 6’ to a Carlos Mora goal. Andrey Soto doubled the lead on 21’.
That left them level on points with island rivals Dominican Republic who were a goal down away from home to Nicaragua on 53’ minutes, but came back to win 2-1 with goals from Heinz Mörschel from the penalty spot in the 54’, and Lucas Bretón on 66’. Even so it wasn’t enough to overhaul Haiti’s superior goal difference.
Curaçao and Haiti will next meet one of the four pre-seeded nations – Mexico, USA, Canada and Panama – in two-legged quarter finals in November. The quarter final winners will qualify for the final four to be played at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in March.
The four quarter final winners will qualify for the 2027 Gold Cup while the four losers will have another shot at Gold Cup qualification via the preliminary qualifiers. Dominican Republic and Costa Rica have also booked a slot in the Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers.
All to play for in Group B tonight
Any of the six teams in Group B could qualify for the quarter finals with just four points separating Surinam at the top and El Salvador at the bottom.
In the third round Jamaica hauled themselves back into contention with a 2-0 away win against El Salvador through two goals by Javon East in the 39’ and 64’.
Jamaica have another Central American away game in the last round, facing Honduras.
Honduras have had a rollercoaster group. Having lost to Surinam at home they then beat Jamaica away before losing to Martinique 2-1 at Stade Municipal Pierre-Aliker in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
Honduras scored first in the 8’ through Erick Puerto, before Jonathan Varane equalised on 40’ and Jonathan Mexique scored a dramatic winner with just two minutes left on the clock.
Martinque host El Salvador next.
Guatemala won what could prove to be a crucial point, taking them to 4 and third place in the table, with a 0-0 draw with leaders Surinam (7 points) at Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Surinam.
Guatemala host Surinam at home tonight in what is a winner-takes-all tie.
