Man City flounder on the south coast, handing Premier League title to Arsenal
May 20 – Arsenal became the champions of England for the first time in 22 years after rivals Manchester City failed to take three points at Bournemouth, drawing 1-1 with a late goal from striker Erling Haaland.
The Londoners now enjoy an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League with one match left in the season when Arsenal take on Crystal Palace. The club last won the Premier League in 2004, a feat they achieved under Arsene Wenger, going the entire season unbeaten with the team earning the nickname ‘The Invincibles’.
Kroupi’s goal handed the title to Arsenal as Bournemouth held off City, who rallied late through Haaland’s injury-time strike, but the visitors ran out of time to go in search of a winning goal.
The Arsenal squad had gathered at their London Colney training ground in Hertfordshire to watch the match and Declan Rice posted a picture on Instagram within minutes of the full-time whistle of him with Kai Havertz, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly and William Saliba. He wrote: “I told you all … it’s done.”
Under current manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal laboured towards the title in the second half of the season, wobbled at times but deservedly won the English title having led the league for most of the season. At 44, Arteta is the second-youngest manager to win the Premier League, behind José Mourinho with Chelsea in 2005.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Arteta’s mentor, offered his congratulations. “We were close. On behalf of everyone at Manchester City, we congratulate Mikel and all the staff, players and fans on winning the Premier League. They deserve it, for so much hard work and effort,” said Guardiola.
Last summer, Arsenal spent big, bringing Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze to complement stalwart Martin Odegaard and talents like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Rice, who had arrived in 2023. Rice constantly proved his value to the team, which demonstrated steel and grit when required. Gyokeres scored 21 times in his first season in England.
At the back, Arsenal excelled as well. They have conceded just 26 goals in 37 games. At times, they demonstrated a simple style of football, often capitalising on set pieces. It provoked criticism in some quarters, but proved to be a recipe for success. Arsenal went a step further than in the past three seasons when they finished as runners up on each occasion.
Fans gathered outside the Emirates Stadium to celebrate the title – and the party might go on a little longer. At the end of the month, Arsenal can crown their season and win the double when they face European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest, Hungary.
