Tomé’s Spain tenure ends following EURO 2025 final defeat to England

August 12 – The Royal Spanish Football Association’s (RFEF) board of directors has announced that it will not renew the contract of women’s national team coach Montse Tomé following the 2025 European Championships.

The 43-year-old replaced Jorge Vilda in the wake of the 2023 World Cup scandal centered around an unsolicited kiss by then RFEF President Luis Rubiales on Jenni Hermoso.

Tomé’s current contract was scheduled to end on 31 August, with RFEF now officially confirming her deal will not be extended.

In a statement, the RFEF thanked Tomé “for her work, professionalism and dedication in various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the RFEF, especially during her time as the national team coach.”

She navigated her side through the fallout of the Rubiales crisis, winning the Nations League and guiding La Roja to the final of EURO 2025 in Switzerland where the world champions failed to win their first European title.

Tomé, however, was still seen as a member of the old regime while women’s football director Reyes Bellver, a new arrival at the RFEF in February, stressed the need for a fresh culture.

She is set to be replaced at the head of the Spanish women’s game by former international Sonia Bermudez

Bermudez earned 61 caps for She country and led the U-23 team as head coach. A former captain of the national side, she played at the 2015 World Cup in Canada where the Spanish exited in the first round.

She also won nine domestic league titles and featured for Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Levante.

The experienced Iraia Iturregi will join Bermudez as assistant. They will be expected to mount a serious title defence at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, the first time the tournament will be staged in South America.
