READERS RESPOND: Many Maryland football fans want investment into program
We asked readers if Maryland should invest more in its football program. The question comes shortly after Terps athletic director Jim Smith said Michael Locksley would be Maryland’s football coach in 2026, despite some calls for his firing. Smith also added that the athletic department planned to increase financial investment into the program with the hope of improving Locksley’s chances for success in the competitive Big Ten Conference.
Here are the results from our online poll:
- Yes — 65.4% (176 votes)
- No — 34.6% (93 votes)
Here’s what some fans said about the Terps’ potential investment into the football team (answers have been edited for clarity and grammar):
No. Invest more in giving students a useful education, one where they can get a job in this changing economy. — Susan Shibley
YES! They moved to the Big Ten to compete. — Jason Benjamin
Yes, and they should also invest in the basketball program, too. — Christopher Anderson
No. Go all in on hoops. — Jason Wienholt
No, it doesn’t matter. The other Big Ten programs will do the same, if not more, so we’ll never leapfrog them. Basketball is a better cost/benefit. Soccer, baseball, and lacrosse are, too. Football is a losing game. — Brian Bankert
As much as I don’t like Maryland, I will say this. Maryland should invest more into football. The Terps are in a prime area of people who love football, and the region has some of the best recruits in the country. Being in the Big Ten, they bring in good opponents. The campus in College Park is nice, the stadium is nice and the parking and tailgating aren’t bad either. I always enjoyed going to Maryland games and the atmosphere, even though i was always there rooting against Maryland. It’s a great venue, and I enjoy going there to see games. — Rob LaBar
Sad that college football is going the way of professional sports where the most money wins, but glad that the athletic director can at least see that it doesn’t matter what coach we bring in without the money to back him. Hats off to Locksley for bringing in the talent that he has on a shoestring budget. The team is still young. I’ve had more hope for Maryland football than I have in a long time. — Jen Gebhart
No, they should leave the Big Ten instead and focus on restoring some traditions. — Steven Kramer
Perhaps the university should focus on education. — Brian Eagle
You can fund the program all you want, that doesn’t mean you keep a lousy coach! — Jeff Vollmer
If you can’t keep the local talent from playing at other schools, more resources will be a waste of money. Penn State had 14 players from the DMV on its roster this year. Most local players want the opportunity to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten, and that means leaving home for other schools. Do you think that Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and others lose their local talent to Maryland? Nope. Their local talent stays home. — Henry Greenfeld
They need to get a real coach to be competitive. He is not the answer. He has lost everywhere he has been a coach. I do believe Maryland should put more money into the program after he is gone. — David Harrell
Go back to the ACC. — Patti White
