READERS RESPOND: Fans think Orioles’ Trevor Rogers could receive extension
We asked readers which Orioles player is most likely to sign a long-term extension. The ballclub recently extended catcher Samuel Basallo, who made his MLB debut earlier this month.
Here are the results from our online poll:
- Trevor Rogers — 44% (169 votes)
- Gunnar Henderson — 31% (120 votes)
- Colton Cowser — 12% (45 votes)
- Other — 5% (21 votes)
- Dean Kremer — 5% (19 votes)
- Adley Rutschman – 3% (11 votes)
Here’s what some fans have told us about the potential long-term deals for Orioles stars. (answers have been edited for clarity and grammar):
Gunnar says he wants to be sure he’s a part of a winning culture before he signs an extension. Leaders and big-time players take initiative. They don’t wait for others to take the lead. If Gunnar wants to be in a winning culture, show the other highly drafted teammates you believe in the Orioles’ future and others will follow. Plus, getting the extension behind him will allow him to focus solely on winning and raising the level of his own play as well as teammates. What scares me is his agent, Scott Boras. It’s not ALL about the money, Gunnar. Win first and you’ll end up with more than you’ll spend anyway. — Mark Browne
It certainly won’t be Henderson, Cowser or Jackson Holliday. Not as long as Scott Boras is their agent. — Robert
It’ll be Rogers, though we all want it to be Gunnar. But Rogers can come at a bit of a discount still versus an ace that’s performed for years because of the small sample size and injury history. — Joe Swain
Jordan Westburg would make sense. He should be a fixture on this team for years to come, and he might come at a discount due to his history of injuries (which, of course, might make an extension attractive to him, but risky for the club). The obvious problem could be his agent, Scott Boras. — Laurence Berbert
Three words why Trevor Rogers signs a long-term contract. NO SCOTT BORAS. — Bruce Cohen
Gunnar says that he wants to be on a wining team. Pretty sure every player shares those thoughts. He is expected to make $500 million or so. Hey Gunnar, why not take a lot less and let your team use the savings to sign a bunch of other good players? That would almost ensure a wining team, don’t you think? After the first $10 million or so, what could you possibly do with it anyway? Why let Scott Boras talk you into some ego trip to insist on your market value? Why not give your team the chance to consistently be a contender year after year? Why not end your career with multiple rings rather than yachts? — Herb Hopkins
Why does anyone think anyone is gonna take a “hometown” discount to play in Baltimore?? — Jim
I don’t think the Orioles sign anyone to a long-term contract. If they were going to do that, they would’ve done that already. — Rob
The answer to the question is NONE. Due to the number of serious injuries incurred by pitchers, they will not offer a long-term contract to a pitcher. Gunnar and Rutschman, its too late to offer them a long-term contract as they are closer to free agency and they can smell more money there. Cowser and Holliday are streaky hitters that can’t hit left-handed pitching and strike out too much. Westburg can’t stay healthy, Mayo the jury is still out and the rest of the players are injury prone or mediocre liabilities. I’m probably not making any friends with these comments, but read the truth. — Buck Powden
I think it would be in the Orioles’ best interest to sign Holliday. He’s young and fans are excited to see him play. Please O’s, make Jackson an Oriole for his career! — Jenn H.
As much as I think we need to re-sign Rogers, Gunnar is the face of the team right now. Extending him gives the fan base hope and affirms ownership’s willingness to spend. They’ve stated it before but we haven’t really seen it yet. — Jackson Duncan
