Milford Mill girls basketball fends off Catonsville’s rally for 44-36 win

Haylee Clark scored eight of her 12 points in the second quarter and Karter Currence scored all nine of her points in the second half to help Milford Mill slide away for a 44-36 victory over host Catonsville.

The Millers improved to 2-0, despite watching a 12-point third quarter lead dwindle down to one .

Catonsville’s Kaitlyn Welsh finished her team’s season opener with a double-double (17 points, 15 rebounds) and led the comeback in the third quarter along with Aburi Forbes (15 points).

Currence, who didn’t play in the first half, made a 3-pointer with 4:10 left in the third quarter giving the Millers a 30-18 However, Catonsville (0-1) answered with a 13-2 run.

Welsh scored the next seven points and Forbes scored four, including a layup that made it 32-31 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

A layup by Currence gave the Millers breathing room and two Comet turnovers early in the fourth quarter turned into baskets by Karisma Martin and Currence. The lead was back to seven and the Comets never threatened again.

The Millers pulled out the victory despite being out-rebounded 40-25 and not shooting well from beyond the 3-point arc.

“I think today was just not a true indication of how we play. It was a true indication of how we want to stay fighting and pull out the win,” Milford Mill coach Candyce Jeter said.

They led 10-7 after the first quarter thanks to strong interior play from senior Kiaya Smith, who had three points, four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in the first quarter alone. She finished the game with eight rebounds and four steals. Freshman Carter Heigh (12 points), knocked down a 3-pointer in the frame.

Clark’s two 3-pointers in the second quarter helped them take a 20-15 lead into halftime.

The Millers didn’t commit a turnover in the second quarter, but the Comets created six turnovers in the third to fuel their comeback.

“I thought the kids battled all game, they really did, they just battled, battled and battled, they played their hardest,” Catonsville coach Mike Mohler said. “There was a lot of shots that didn’t go in, a lot of shots where we were kind of throwing up some hopes, but it’s all in the learning. We’re still young, we have one senior.”

Mohler, who has 597 career wins, praised the Millers.

“I think that Coach is doing an excellent job with those girls,” Mohler said. “I mean they run their stuff, they had us scouted. I thought they did a helluva job. It was a tough opener for us. They are a pretty good team. Unfortunately we’ve got to play them again.”

Next for the Comets is a date with Mount de Sales in the final game of the Catonsville Cup on Saturday. It’s a full day of basketball with boys and girls JV and varsity games beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The charity fundraiser benefits Penelope, the 10-month daughter of Catonsville boys coach Jason Harris. She spent 232 days in NICU after being born with a life-threatening rare disease called Magascystis-Microcolon-Intestinal Hypoperistasis Syndrome. It also benefits the Ronald McDonald House.
