Severn boys basketball grinds out 63-55 overtime road win against Gerstell
Whenever Severn and Gerstell meet, fans on both sides expect a tight, physical battle between two hard-playing, well-coached teams. After all, it was only a few years ago that the two programs faced off for the MIAA B Conference title — the first of back-to-back championships for the Admirals.
“Every time we play Gerstell, it’s a knock-down, drag-out fight,” Severn coach Mike Glasby said. “I’m very proud of our guys tonight.”
After Gerstell’s Grant Ray hit a pair of game-tying free throws — two of his game-high 36 points — to force overtime, Severn jumped out to a quick start in the extra period and pulled away for a 63-55 road win Friday night.
“I was a little disappointed that we gave up the lead,” Glasby said. “But I was proud of the way we regrouped, strung together stops and finished the game strong in overtime.”
The 4-0 run to open overtime mirrored how the Admirals played the entire night. Glasby leaned on contributions from any and everyone as he looked to grind out the win.
With Sean Harvey struggling to find a rhythm early, DJ Lee took control of the Severn offense from the opening tip. Lee and Ray traded baskets as both started hot. In a first quarter filled with missed shots, Lee earned the ball — and his coach’s trust — by staying aggressive. Once he saw a few shots fall, Lee went on a tear as he tried to keep pace with Ray.
“I’m always ready to go, so when I hit that first shot, it just gives me even more confidence,” Lee, who finished with 25 points said. “I try to stay aggressive and always play downhill.”
A 9-0 run in the second quarter gave the Admirals not only the lead but the momentum, as more players began to find their rhythm. For Severn, that spark came from Brody Durm, who took advantage of open looks and limited defensive attention. He knocked down several timely shots in what may have been his best performance of the season.
“I don’t usually hit as many shots as I did tonight, but I just kept shooting,” Durm said. “I try to be the best glue guy I can be for the team.”
The Admirals elevated their defense coming out of halftime, briefly slowing Ray and opening the second half with an 8-1 run. Grayson Skeeter made an impact on both ends, poking the ball free from Falcons ballhandlers and converting crafty layups. TJ Jones entered the game and played with a purpose, securing key rebounds that proved critical and helping set up Harvey as he began to find scoring opportunities.
“They are such a hard team to guard,” Gerstell coach Jeff Cheevers said. “Even when you think you have a stop, they have so many weapons and options. Still, I was proud of how we played and executed the defensive game plan.”
The win capped a long road stretch for Severn, which has played eight of its first nine games away from home. Glasby said the demanding, unorthodox schedule is intentional, designed to prepare his team for another B Conference title defense. Friday’s win reflected that approach, and he believes the Admirals are still improving.
“We’ve developed into a program that has pride, attitude and resolve, even in the toughest moments,” Glasby said. “Now we’re looking for that to continue.”
