Imperious Barcelona glide past Lyon to win women’s UCL final 4-0

May 23 – FC Barcelona clinched a fourth Women’s Champions League with a resounding 4-0 win against OL Lyonnes with two goals apiece from both Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo.
It took Barcelona 55 minutes to find their first attempt on target but when Pajor raced into the right-hand channel of the Lyon box she dispatched the ball with a sharpness and finality that her team had so been lacking. It was against the run of play, but the low, clinical finish left Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler with no chance.
In the 69th minute, the Polish striker added a second from close range to become the competition’s top goalscorer.
In the last minutes of the game, Salma Paralluelo’s brace, including a sumptuous strike from the edge of the box, ensured Barcelona’s fourth Champions League win in six seasons, cementing the club’s reputation as the team to beat this decade.
Pajor’s 55th-minute strike had broken open a cagey final. In the first half, the Spanish team struggled to develop control and rhythm with Lyon enjoying 60% of possession. The French were physical and pressed, preventing Barcelona from having long spells of possession.
Lyon almost took the lead from a 15th-minute set piece when the rebound of Wendie Renard’s free header fell to Lindsey Heaps to nudge home before VAR chalked off the strike for offside.
At the other end, Renard hesitated when responding to a long ball, allowing Pajor to get in behind but her lob just missed direction. The Barcelona number 17 then sliced a shot well wide from inside the box. In the 41st minute, Lyon’s Selma Bacha whipped in a powerful free kick which the Barcelona goalkeeper parried.
After the break, Pajor’s goal forced Lyon to become more attacking. They responded with a low attempt from Vicki Becho, which Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll tipped around the post, and introduced Marie-Antoinette Katoto for Ada Hegerberg, who had been peripheral all match.
Malawi international and substitute Tabitha Chawinga failed to beat Coll when she was clean through. It was the French side’s best opportunity, but Pajor’s second strike had proven to be a knockout blow.
On the stroke of full-time, Paralluelo smashed a sweet strike into the top-right corner, 3-0. Time and again, Barcelona picked off Lyon on the counter. In the 93rd minute, Paralluelo added a fourth following a quick transition. The Catalans had been ruthless and chants of ‘Campeones’ rolled down from the stands.
Once again, Barcelona rule Europe.
