Diarra settles landmark transfer case with FIFA

June 9 – FIFA and former player Lassana Diarra have settled their landmark transfer case about claims for compensation.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder wanted €65 million from the world governing body and the Belgian FA after he was denied a transfer to Belgian club Charleroi in 2014. He argued that the compensation claim covered damages incurred after Lomomotiv Moscow cancelled his contract.

“Following the global agreement they have reached, Mr Lassana and FIFA have settled all legal proceedings between them,” a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement. “FIFA has not made any admission of liability nor payment by way of compensation. FIFA will not be providing any further comment at this time.”

Diarra was slapped with a €10.5 million fine and 15-month ban in 2014 for breaching his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow “without just cause.”  Belgian club Charleroi wanted to sign Diarra, but withdrew because FIFA rules would make them jointly liable for his €10.5 million fine.

In 2024, Diarra won a landmark case at the Court of Justice for the European for the European Union (CJEU) that forced FIFA to amend transfer regulations to comply with EU competition law. He argued that FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) restricted his right to work. FIFA’s amendments have been implemented on an interim basis with further consultation to take place.

FIFA is confident that it has done in enough to prevent major changes to the transfer system.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
