What Is Acne?
Acne is a skin disease consisting of blemishes that can occur on your face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. Acne is a massive problem for millions of people. Pimples occur primarily due to the hair follicle in our skin that contains the sebaceous glands, called the oil glands that produce an oil called sebum that comes on to the surface from the pore and lubricates your hair and skin.
Generally, these sebaceous glands produce the right amount of sebum. However, as we hit puberty, the body begins to grow, and hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands causing it to produce more amount of sebum. As the glands produce sebum inside the pores, at the same time, new skin cells are continually growing as well shedding the outer layers of the skin. However sometimes, these dead skin cells do not fall off. As a result, the unshredded skin cells block the pores, which results in the accumulation of the extra amount of sebum a gradually forming a bump around it.
And as sebum provides food to bacteria, these bacterias slowly begin to build colonies inside it and start to multiply, causing an infection. Therefore, our body quickly reacts and asks our immune system to respond to the situation and send help as soon as possible. In simpler words, the body asks the immune system to send blood and immune cells to fight the infection.
The blood supplied by the immune system turns the infected area red, whereas the immune cells attack and kill the bacteria, which results in swelling and formation of a pimple. In most cases, several people tend to develop a considerable amount of Acne on their face just before an important event. Many people tend to squeeze pimples to ger rid of them quickly. However, packing a pimple does more harm than good. Though it is hard to resist touching the pimple on your face and getting rid of all the unwanted bumps on your face, popping the pimples is not the solution as it only worsens the situation.

How Does Acne Develop?

The skin cells which lie in the follicle shaft are replaced by new ones every 28 days.
In Acne, the skins lining the follicle walls produce too much keratin, a substance that helps in protecting the skin against damage. This excess of keratin can cause the dead skin cells to stick together and eventually to make them harder to expel from the follicles. And the cells which aren’t exposed from the follicles mix with the flow of oil produced by the sebaceous glands which produce oil to keep your skin moisturised.
However, the excess keratin produced in the body tampers with the skin by mixing with the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands. Together, these dead skin cells and oil go on to form a blockage in the hair follicle. This plug of oil and hair follicle is the primary reason why most Acne begins. Although, sometimes the blockage can come from the outside of the hair follicle when substances such as sweat, make up, and oil on the skin surface enter the follicle’s opening and become trapped.
As the oil from the sebaceous glands continues to flow towards the surface of the skin, it tends to build up behind the blockage, in turn, making the blockage larger. The bacteria that live on your skin and inside your hair follicle find the oil blockage an ideal environment to set up camp. As a result, these hair follicles tend to set up colonies inside these blockages and start multiplying rapidly, causing the blockage to grow. As the blockage grows, it causes a split in the hair follicle wall. White Blood Cells (WBCs) are called in for help, and these WBCs rush in for help and fight the bacteria that are residing inside these blockages. However, this fight between the WBCs and the bacteria causes inflammation of the surrounding skin. In addition to that, it also forms a pocket of pus which is made up of dead WBCs, bacteria, and other debris.
